well. partly cloudies today. occasionally showers. we'll talk about that coming up. >> right now san mateo bridge traffic looks good getting out to the high-rise no major problems. steve mentioned there will be a little bit of showers in some of the commutes. we'll let you know when that happens. this is a look at the golden gate bridge. let's go back to the desk. we are continuing to follow breaking news out of union city where a massive fire at a strip mall has damaged several businesses. claudine wong is live now with information on where that fire may have started and an injury to a firefighter claudine. >> reporter: fortunately that firefighter will be okay. let me show you the scene right now. still very active out here. this union city strip mall. you can see the fire fighters still in place. you can take a look over the roof line you can still see white smoke coming up. most of the fire was in that roof line. i want to show you video of

this fire. it was huge. the flames at their height were really going. this started just after 1:00 this morning. that is when they got the call. they do belief at this point this fire was burning for quite awhile before it was discovered. it took about 90 minutes to get it out. about ten businesses effected by this fire. and i want to give you a look at the damage. because firefighters just took us upright into these businesses so we could get a look at what the fire did. you can see the damage is extensive. there is also a roof collapse at this fire roof caved in on top of the businesses. you can see there will be a lot of cleanup a lot of rebuilding that will have to be done. in the meantime, though, firefighters say this is a tough fire to fight. >> it probably had been burning for quite some time. probably concealed in the attic. the amount of flame, the intensity for the first units once they got holes cut was pretty dramatic. that is when they got extra help.

>> reporter: there was a threat for for some time to a nearby apartment complex. >> yeah about five minutes after we woke up someone ran down i believe it was the fire department ran down the hall knocking on doors waking everyone up so they could get out if they had to. >> reporter: back live out here on scene again you can see the white smoke coming from the roof line. what they are doing now is keeping an eye out for hot spots. then they are looking for daylight. once daylight comes they will assess what goes into the businesses. they believe it started in the corner of this strip mall. whether suspicious, how it started, they just don't know. live in union city claudine wong. overnight a woman was found badly burned on a road in santa rosa. deputies saw that woman on sonoma mountairoad just before 11:00 last night while responding to a domestic

violence call. deputies found burned clothing about a mile away in a driveway. they are still investigating the incident. it's official ross mirkarimi has been reinstated as san francisco's sheriff. that is after supervisors went against ross mirkarimi. cheering from mirkarimi supporters at the late night decision in a 7-4 vote ss voted permanently removing mirkarimi. he will receive back pay and said he's ready to get back to work. >> right now it's about moving forward. we want to mend fences with all parties. >> finally. i think justice was done. and i have a message you have to be bigger. because we have our sheriff back finally.

>> the supervisors decision ends the legal saga that started after mirkarimi bruised his wife's arm in a new years eve dispute and culminated in a debate whether that is official misconducted. mayor lee released a comment. he goes on to say. domestic violence has no place in our city. will never be considered a private family matter and never be tolerated. >> i think it's outrageous. i think that campos sends a message we don't take it serious. >> hundreds lined up to speak last night many were supporters but domestic violence advocates say it's a conflict for him to

serve as sheriff. we will have continuing coverage on the mirkarimi vote all morning long. a court hearing is scheduled this afternoon for a man accused of abducting a nine- year-old girl from a san mateo school. the incident happened at parkside elementary nearly three weeks ago. bradley walk into the girl's bathroom, grabbed a nine-year- old girl, and carried her off. the girl managed to escape. prosecutors say he faces addition nap charges stemming from other school trespassing incidents. he's expected to enter a plea today. the house committee will hold a hearing looking into diplomatic security in libya that killed ambassador chris stevens and three other americans. the new information about the attack being released by the state department ahead of hearing this morning. the man behind the antiislamic film innocence of

muslims which sparked violence in many parts of the world is scheduled to appear in a los angeles courtroom today he was convicted in 2010 of bank fraud. prosecutors say they want his probation revoked. he lied to probation officers and used aliases. new this morning from stockholm to stanford a bay area professor just won the nobel prize. matt keller is live at his home. >> reporter: he is inside his home now with his wife and they are both awake after finally getting that phone call from the nobel committee. they are doing interviews now. we are next in line to talk to him. before we do that here's the announcement from the nobel committee from just a few hours ago. >> and professor brian

suburb where they uncovered bombing supplies. the war in afghanistan is expected to top the agenda as natoed administers meet in belgian today. they are expected to formerly announce marine general john allen as the next commander. 130 allied service members have been killed or injured in attacks by afghan troops. the state department is revealing details about attack on u.s. consulate in libya. as alison burns reports to us this morning from washington, d.c. the information comes hours after a high profile congressional hearing about that tragedy. house investigations committee has called state department officials here today to testify members of congress are demanding to know why there wasn't more security at the u.s. consulate in benghazi. what officials knew about a potential threat and whether

the obama administration intentionally tried to mislead the public in believing it was a random attack during a protest. state department officials will reportedly testify today they never believe the attack that killed ambassador chris stevens and three other americans was simply a result of the protest. a republican on the committee went on cnn this morning and blasted the administration for seeming to change its descriptions of what happened. >> now we come out to find those were absolutely not true, they are somewhere between totally false and absolutely not true. >> reporter: as for ambassador stevens security state department officials will testify he was in a secure area during the attack but tied of smoke inhalation and a rapid response force of libyans tried to come to his aid. a whistle blower will also be testifying today about how the state department rejected repeated requests for more security in libya. reporting live from washington, d.c. alison burns ktvu channel 2 news. we are now hearing gas

prices in california may have finally reached its peak. aaa announced it expects prices to begin a downward trend after hitting record highs for the fourth day in a row. several factors have paved the way for prices to go down possibly as soon as today. meantime california senators dianne feinstein and barbara boxer are calling on federal authorities to investigate the reasons behind the recent price hikes. newly released document shows the pepper spraying incident at uc davis last fall. they released more than 9500 pages of documents and e-mails yesterday in response to public records act request from media organizations. now among the documents thousands of angry e-mails from around the world demanding the resignation of the university chancellor. there are also e-mails of support from academies who offered advice on how to handle the controversy. michael savage is planning to return to the air waves.

savage tells the chronicle listeners should expect to hear him on the air within two weeks. last month his popular talk show left the air waves after he won a legal battle to get out of his contract with talk radio network. his attorney says they are needn'ting with three -- negotiating with three big players but they are not naming any names. today is the first day of business for the target store at the metreon. target says the store is designed to accommodate urban shoppers. and it will offer smaller packages of common items. >> very nice. i always go in for a couple things and i end up spending annuitying way more. >> you are one of the heavy overstuffed bags. >> yes. >> you don't about a 200 -- you

don't want a 200 pack of toilet paper? >> do you sal? >> yes, toy. you have to be prepared. let's do the traffic. traffic is moving along in many areas. let's take look commute on 880 north and southbound the traffic is looking good. there are no major problems here. if you are driving into downtown oakland it's a nice looking drive. also the morning commute on the san mateo bridge is off to a good start getting on to the high-rise over to the peninsula. we are looking at the south bay through cal tran data and our own data. if you are driving on 101 northbound, that looks pretty good. 280 and 85 are off to a good start. let's go to steve. our system is doing exactly what they are doing. it's wrapping back in. shower activity. occasionally lightning. there's been cloud to cloud lightning. numerous reports. matthew all the way out to i believe toward the city and also areas over oakland. he had lightning off in the

distance. the biggest activity was over the san mateo coast and wrapping back around from lake county into mendocino county. the low itself is moving very slowly toward southern california. as it does flow around that is counter clock wise. you can get sun, clouds, and showers. focus right off of half-moon bay it looks like most of that is heading out into the pacific. 40s on the temps. another cool morning for some. low clouds, high based clouds. clear skies and also lightning. occasionally some rain like last night it happened from mountain view to san jose. that could happen again today. as that low moves south it could move back in toward santa cruz. partly sunny and cloudy. kind of a broad brush forecast. 60s and 70s on the temps. i think today is the main active day. there could be some lingering into wednesday night and thursday. by friday it's too far south. >> thank you, steve. the european stock markets are down this morning after the

international monetary fund singled out the euro zone debt crisis as a key threat to global economic growth. overnight much of the same for the markets in asia. china was up slightly as investors there remain hopeful there will be more economic easing. checking in on our numbers here's where we start the day. losses posted yesterday as investors worry about the upcoming earnings season that began after the closing bell. we do have a couple positive earnings reports to talk about this morning. we'll tell you about that in a little bit. right now the futures do indicate a slightly lower opening here in the u.s.. new research from finance professors at duke and emery universities raised questions about the quality of the quarterly earnings reports issued by u.s. corporations and anonymous survey of chief financial officers found 20% of companies use aggressive accounting methods to legally alter the outcome of earnings

reports. the companies manipulate earnings to hit a target. a surprising 40% of those down played their numbers during the quarter so they can show improvement in future quarters. victims of abuse react to the jerry sandusky sentencing. >> what i found particularly disturbing was sandusky's demeanor. >> what a south bay man who's own sexual abuse case made headlines here in the bay area had to say. lucky to be alive. a hit and run victim survives a horrible crash. what could help track down the driver.

welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning news. time now is 5:23. a hit and run victim in north carolina hopes surveillance video will help lead to an arrest. we have a warning this video is graphic. surveillance cameras captured a car hitting shawn lewis as he ran across the street. the impact of the crash tossed him into the air. initially that driver you can see stopped and got out but then drove away. lewis says he has not been able to return to work and needs a cane to get around. the city of oakland wants an auto shop to pipe down. the chronicle reports neighbors have complained about late night noise coming from the auto shop. oakland city attorney has filed a lawsuit against the operators and owners which includes the bank of new york. the suit seeks 1,000 a days in

fines if it continues. bay area man at the center of a high profile sexual abuse case is giving his own opinion on the sentencing of jerry sandusky. will lynch says the trial involving the penn state assistant football coach has stirred up a lot of emotions in him. he was cleared of assault charges in july after beating a former priest he said molested him as a child. >> i think if we can repeal the statue of limitations and these people can be brought to justice 20, 30, 50 years down the line that can probably the biggest deterrent. >> lynch is working with the santa clara district attorney office and his nonprofit organization to change the law. sandusky was sentenced to at least 30 years in prison. some big name golfers will tee off today in the south bay. the first round begins at 7:20 this morning. tiger woods will not return this year, famous golfers that will appear include ernie elles

effected by that fire. and firefighters again are out there with the investigation. an apartment building was also evacuated. >> we were asleep and the dog started barking. the next thing we know we were looking outside and there were red lights flashing. >> all evacuated residents have been allowed to return to their homes. overnight news san francisco sheriff ross mirkarimi is keeping his job after hours of public system four supervisors voted against removing him from office. tara moriarty is joining us live from san francisco. >> reporter: this decision came as a shock to even mirkarimi himself who says he will be showing up for work here today. now mayor ed lee needed nine of the 11 supervisors in order to outst mirkarimi but only seven voted to do so. >> the motion is not approved, the charges of misconduct against sheriff ross mirkarimi

are not sustained. >> reporter: mirkarimi supporters cheered after the late night decision came down after nine hours of presentations from mirkarimi's and lees camp. john avalos, david campos, jane kim, and the mayor's own opponent tee voted to keep mirkarimi. mirk roadway 3450e spoke to supporters while those supervisors who voted to keep him on the job as he said he did listen to their comments which criticized him for the domestic violence misdemeanor. >> i do not take anything what they say lightly. this whole experience needless to say has a way of changing and trance forming somebody. that is the message i take as sheriff of san francisco loud and clear. >> reporter: now mirkarimi will receive back pay from the time he was suspended. he pled guilty to a false

imprisonment charge stemming from a new years eve incident with his wife that suffered a bruised arm and a few months later ed lee did suspend him. he did issue a statement saying domestic violence has no place in our city. we will never be considered a private family matter and never be tolated. coming up we'll have relaxation from campos. live from city hall i'm tara moriarty. >> we'll have more coverage of the mirkarimi vote all morning long. we also have a special section dedicated to the case on our home page at ktvu.com. a 17-year-old girl is fighting for her life after being stabbed multiple times in san francisco's mission district. the girl was attacked on vince la and 21st streets just after 7:00 last night. at this point no arrests have been made. police are trying to determine if there is a connection between the two incidents. firefighters are looking into the cause of a fire that left three people homeless in

san jose. that happened at 6:40 last night on fawn drive. three adults that live in the home got out safely but they are looking for a new place to stay after firefighters declared the home uninhabitable. firefighters believe the fire started in an outdoor severalling unit. fire investigators are looking for an arsonist that has been targeting a west san jose neighborhood. they planta hand out fliers today asking for the publics help to solve these crimes. at least eight suspicious fires have been set in dumpsters and bushes in the area. >> it can catch to other houses. i'm very concerned. >> police plan to step up patrols in the area and firefighters are asking neighbors to immediately report any suspicious activity. mitt romney continues campaigning today in the battleground state of ohio. new jersey governor chris cristy will once again join

romney in ohio. a comment he made about abortion is getting attention. he told the des moines register he would not pursue any abortion related legislation if elected president but that he would use an executive order to reinstate a policy that bans american funding of abortions in other countries. president obama is back at the white house today after also campaigning in ohio yesterday. the president has a meeting scheduled with secretary of state hillary clinton following the congressional hearing looking into the attack on the osteogens lat in lib -- u.s. consulate in libya. then he heads back out on the campaign in florida. the largest of the battleground states. arguments begin today in a a landmark supreme court case. what the court could decide about the future of college administrations. stanford university professor is one of two americans awarded the nobel prize in chemistry. we want to show you new video of the stanford researcher dr.

brian kobilka. he and a duke scientist won the prize for their ground breaking discoveries of cell proteins. it could lead to the development of better medications. dr. kobilka is a professor at stanford school of medicine. it is a short week four days for some people out there. so let's check in with sal and see if that is having any impact. >> mike and pam we didn't have a lot of -- we had a lot lighter commute. tuesday has been slow. and today we'll see what happens. let's go out and take a look at what we have on highway 4. it looks kind of typical. it will be a little slow already in antioch as the early crowd gets on the road. it's not too bad in bay point. if you drive to the bay bridge toll plaza it's also still light. usually we hit a crowd here at 6:15 or so. and the morning drive in san jose area that still looks good if you are driving on 101. no major problems on the 101 or

from the other side and pulled that one out. >> no one was hurt. fortunately investigators are still trying to figure out what caused the car to catch fire. there are reports the u.s. government will issue a warning for people that have replaced air bags in their cars in the past three years. the government will alert drivers that counterfeit air bags may have been installed. safety officials worry some may not inflate in an accident. both the a's and giants are staying alive. each team pulled out a thrilling victory. alex savidge is live outside the coliseum where another sellout is expected today. >> reporter: the home crowd lifted the a's last night as they pulled out that big win over the tigers. the team keep in mind still on the brink of elimination head into game four tonight against the tigers in this best of five series. the a's defense it was strong pitching helped them pull out this win as they beat the tigers 2-0 last night. one of the highlights of the

night the giants kept their playoff hopes alive. the giants beat the reds 2-0 in ten innings last night. they live to play another game. game four for them at 4:00 game for the a's at 6:00 tonight. live in oakland i'm alex savidge. the number of people stricken by meningitis continues to grow. the outbreak has spread to ten states from new jersey to florida. 12 people have died but doctors fear the toll will increase even more. the outbreak is traced to a massachusetts pharmacy which produced steroid injections for back pain. there is a growing call to regulate specialized pharmacies that take drug ingredients and package them into medication for specific clients. the supreme court will hear arguments today in a case that would have a big impact on college admissions. it stems from a 2008 lawsuit when a white student sued the university of texas in austin

claiming she was denied admissions due to her race. supreme court upheld the use of affirmative action back in 2003 but the court has become increasingly conservative and could restrict or end the use of race as a factor for admissions. bay area is home for the newest winner of a no bell prize. a stanford professor won the prestigious award. >> reporter: we just spoke with brian kobilka here at his home. he is very excited about the big announcement this morning. he got a phone call at 2:20 this morning but he missed it. he thought it was just a wrong number. but fortunately the nobel prize committee called back with the news he won the prize in chemistry in his work. >> i thought i was dreaming to

begin with. and just very excited and happy. >> reporter: professor brian kobilka shared the prize with duke university professor robert lefkowitz. professor kobilka is the chairman at me neck already and physiology. he and professor lev koa its will split the $1.2 million prize. he doesn't expect the nobel prize to change what he does but what he is hoping for is this award will help him get funding for more research in the future. we are look okay. even though the sun is not up. we are seeing more people there. but it's still kind of one of my words is doable. still doable here. you heard alex say that the a's

the recall effects cars made between july of 2005 and may of 2010 and it includes a long list. the camry, yaris, cover row la, matrix. rav 4, highlander, anise coy yeah suvs are also on the list. bank of america's country wide units settled a similar suit for $1 billion. walmart is expanding the same day delivery test to the bay area. right now the world's largest retailer is offering same day delivery for popular items.

good morning. we've had cloud to cloud lightning from about east bay oakland san mateo coast. rain down toward san jose. there will be sun, clouds, and showers today. high surf warning is in effect on the hawaiian island of ah way hoo. five people had to be rescued of getting caught in the rip currents. dramatic rescue on pier 39 as wildlife experts work to free a sea lion from a fishing lion.

rescuers used a tranquilizer dart and net to capture the animal. officials say it's not uncommon for the animals to get stuck in debris which could cause them to check. >> they will get on often when it's little and it stays on. they wear it and grow into it. >> sea lion is now recovering at the marine animal center. a second lion was spotted with a line around its neck but it was scared by a tour boat and escape into the water. in a report made public yesterday the alameda county district attorney found that the shooting was justified because the officer thought his life was in danger. blueford was shot during a police pursuit back in may of investigators say he pointed a gun at the officers. the family and their attorney dispute that blueford had a gun. this is an amazing story. a cab driver in las vegas is being hailed a hero after he
